Exploring Environmental and Conservation Contests in Central Texas

The Trinity River Authority's annual art competition is a great opportunity for first through eighth grade students living in the Trinity River basin to create original works of art that demonstrate positive ways of protecting the environment through recycling. All works of art must include the phrase “Take care of Texas”, spelled correctly, to qualify. After the competition, participants were encouraged to use the techniques they had learned in a natural-themed Halloween art contest. To further explore the native plants, animals, and ecology of Central Texas, a series of interactive summer presentations, expertly guided local walks, and fun educational activities for children of all ages were organized.

Last National Public Lands Day, a small wildlife refuge in South Texas devised an innovative way for volunteers to express their love for the local environment. Additionally, high school agricultural science students interested in conservation are invited to participate in the public speaking contest on soil and water management. All contest entries at the local and state levels must be submitted along with this contest entry form (placed on the back of each poster) within the delivery dates set by the local conservation district. Works of art must be original works created by the contest participant and must not have been submitted, distributed, or won any other prize in any other contest. The contest is a partnership between the Texas FFA, the Texas Association of Vocational Agriculture Teachers, the State of Texas Soil and Water Conservation Board, and the Texas Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts. TCEQ commissioners and representatives of the Texas Chemical Council will recognize the three Grand Prize winners at the Texas environmental excellence award banquet in May 2024. Furthermore, Texas students enrolled in grades K-5 are invited to participate in the Take Care of Texas Kids art contest from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
